Chow chow kootu,a popular tamil brahim style kootu, made with chayote, chana dal and fresh coconut masala. We call this as “chow chow white kootu”. This is normally made during at my mom’s place for dinner as accompaniment for Vathakuzhambhu. This version does not involves addition of any moong dal | toordal as we add for normal Kootu.

Method with step by step pictures :
- Cut the chow chow in to cubes.
- Soak the chana dal in water for 10 minutes.
- Pressure cook chow chow and chana dal by adding little salt and asafoetida. Cook for 3-4 whistles.
- Do not add more water while cooking, it will become watery.
- Grind the coconut, green chilies and cumin seeds into a fine paste by adding a little water to it.
- Keep it aside.
- Heat a kadai and add the coconut oil.
- Temper mustard seeds and curry leaves.
- Add the cooked veggie and the ground coconut masala to it.
- Allow this mixture to boil for 2 minutes.
- Switch off the flame and serve it enjoy with vathakuzhambhu sadam.
Notes:
- This kootu can be made with white pumpkin/cabbage/bottlegourd.
- Don't add turmeric powder to this chow chow kootu.

ReplyDeleteI am very curious to know, why turmeric shouldn't be added to chow chow kootu? I always check out your version or cooking as it almost matches my granny's.
Only for this kootu since we want to make this white we don't add turmeric. if you want you can add
