Vazhakkai puttu, Vazhakkai podimas recipe

Vazhakkai putu| Vazhakkai podimas recipe, a dry curry with raw banana, cooked in a simple South Indian way. We generally make vazhakkai podimas without the addition of onion and garlic. I have shared a version of Vazhakkai podimas with video, in which we use a freshly ground spice powder. This vazhakkai puttu recipe i learnt from my friend, who shared with me the recipe of thakkali gotsu. She has been telling about this for a long time, but recently during  our morning walk, i asked her for the recipe and she shared the same. We loved the Vazhakkai podimas | Vazhakkai puttu with poondu rasam.

Drumstick masala recipe, Murungakkai masala

Murungakkai masala recipe| Drumstick masala, recipe with step by step pictures, popular South Indian dry curry using drumstick pairs up well with plain rice. I grew up eating Murungakkai in sambar and poricha kootu . Sometimes it is added in aviyal too. But never knew we can make curry with Murungakkai. We have a neighbour aunty during our childhood days. Aunty is a good cook and i have posted few recipes of her here too ( kurunai vadai, kuska biryani) The very first time i tasted Murungakai masala was at her house only. Somehow loved the blend of aromatic spices. We have a Murungai maram(tree) in our house and it used to yield loads of drumstick during the season. Amma always distribute it to the entire street. Aunty makes this drumstick masala for us. And some delicious murungakkai sambar by patti will be sent to them. I just randomnly recalled the recipe and made it, but the first bite of it gave me loads of memories of my childhood.

Cabbage Paruppu usili recipe

Cabbage paruppu usili, a traditional tamil brahmin recipe, made with lentils and veggies, a perfect accompaniment for rice. Generally we make paruppu usili with beans, broad beans and cluster beans. My mother in law is an expert in making Paruppu usili and she makes Vazhaipoo paruppu usili always. Also i learnt to cook paruppu usili from her only. We always make the steamed version of paruppu usili in our house. Never tasted the non steamed version also never tried at home too. The non steamed version involves little extra oil, so i always prefer the steamed version. But last week i casually tried this version of paruppu usili with beans. It was quite good and shared the picture in Jeyashri's kitchen instagram too. Many asked me for the recipe and here comes the recipe of cabbage paruppu usili with step by step pictures and video.

Cauliflower kovakkai curry recipe, Tindora and cauliflower curry

Cauliflower kovakkai curry recipe, a simple south Indian version of curry made using Cauliflower and Kovakkai | tindora | ivy gourd and the home made sambar masala enhances the taste of this curry. This combo of cauliflower and Tindora i tasted for the first time in my sister's place last year. We all loved it and kids loved the most. Generally tindora| Kovakkai is not their favorite but still i make it a point to add in the menu once in 10 days. In this way of making, they never even realise that kovakkai is added in the curry. Once thing is it is quite laborious to chop them finely and the curry shrinks it's volume after it is cooked. But i can say it is worth the effort. The curry pairs well with  South Indian gravies like Rasam, Sambar, Vathakuzhambu, Mor kuzhambu..

Oven- roasted Vegetables recipe

Oven roasted veggies,I always used to drool at the pictures of these whenever i see in Instagram and Food gawker. Some how it was big mind block for me to try my hands on Oven roasted veggies. When i did a cookery demo here in Singapore, i once attempted a Veg shaslik in barbecue sauce, which was made on tawa. Oven roasted veggies is similar to this only. Few weeks back, while i was chatting with my school friends, one of my friend told that she makes oven roasted vegetables on a regular basis. I got the tips from her and she clarified all my silly doubts and finally i made the oven roasted veggies, with a simple seasoning of salt and pepper. Try this at home and enjoy your meal.

Vazhakkai varuval recipe| Raw banana fry

Vazhakkai varuval | raw banana fry is a most favorite recipe for most of us. When i was school, one of my friend used to bring vazhakkai varuval in her lunch box. The Vazhakkais will be cut in roundels. I am love the shape of that vazhakkai and the way it is evenly roasted. I have tried many times vazhakkai tawa fry at home, though it turns out well, it will absorb either more oil and also will become dry when i eat it after some time. Some time back in Instagram, Rekha of Reshkitchen shared the recipe of vazhakkai varuval. It was too attractive and immediately tried it next day. We all loved it.  Enjoy this with sambar or rasam rice.

Keerai Vepudu recipe | Spinach stir fry

Keerai Vepudu | Keerai poriyal | Keerai thuvattal, is a dry curry made with spinach. Vepudu is basically Andhra style curry. I learnt this keerai vepudu from Chef. Venkatesh bhat's show few months back. I have tried this few times at home and recently made this during last weekend and shared in Jeyashri's kitchen Instagram too. I generally make keerai kootu and poriyal is a rare thing i make using round spinach. Generally keerai poriyal will be made using Murunga keerai | drumstick leaves. Both my kids will never fuss for keerai kootu and in fact they love to have spinach. But they won't prefer keerai in the form of poriyal. This keerai vepudu, they liked it, but since i made Sambar sadam along with that, they skipped eating the vepudu this time.

Potato masal recipe | Urulai pottalam | Madurai special

Urulai kizhangu pottalam
Uruali pottalam | potato masal is a spicy masala curry made with potato , packed and served in lotus leaf. If you are brought up in Madurai or visited Madurai ( a town in south of Tamil nadu), then you must be knowing about this. We get this in the original nei mittai kadai shop near the west gopuram tower. Whenever we go to pudhu mandapam for shopping, we buy this potato masal and take it home and eat with curd rice.  Sometimes during weekend when my dad goes to the city to meet any friend, he buys this potato pottalam for us and we used to wait for him patiently and then eat our lunch. This potato masala will be very spicy . It has been many years now since i tasted this potato masal. When i was casually chatting with the author of Puliyogare travels some time back, he shared with me the episode of his food trial in madurai and about his experience in the original nagapattinam nei mittai kadai. Based on that i recipe idea and with some inputs from my friend who recently visited her parents in madurai, i have finally made this Uruali masala. This can be even served with poori or stuffed inside paratha or can be had with sambar rice and rasam rice as a curry too.

Broccoli usili recipe | Broccoli podimas

broccoli usili

Broccoli usili or broccoli podimas is a south Indian dry curry made with the combination of a veggie and dal. I have posted the beans paruppu usili and vazhaipoo paruppu usili earlier, both are always a super hit recipe. This method of making paruppu usili i read in a cook book and tried it for a potluck party too. I was bit not sure how it will be liked by all as it is not the traditional brahmin way of making the usili. But to my surprise, everyone liked it very much and it was a huge hit too. You can make this by replacing broccoli with beans, capsicum.

Pan fried Eggplant | Easy brinjal recipes

pan fried eggplant

Pan fried eggplant | Pan fried aubergine  is a simple and easy recipe made using the big variety of eggplant. We generally make baingan bhartha or Kathrikkai gotsu using this big variety of eggplant. Amma makes bajji out of eggplants and we as a family loves the bajji a lot. From my childhood, we used to love eggplants and we get fresh home grown eggplants from one village lady, who delivers us regularly. This pan fried eggplant i wanted to try for a long time and finally made it last week. But that day i didn't have to time to click. Finally made it today and clicked the pictures. The first time i had with rotis and today i had with rice and rasam. Both ways it tasted yummy. See the notes section for variation of the recipe.
