Millet Kalkandu bath, Pongal special recipes

Millet Kalkandu bath recipe with video and step by step pictures, a popular sweet made during Pongal festival in Tamilnadu. Traditionally we make Sakkarai pongal for pongal festival in Tamilnadu. Sakkarai pongal and Ven pongal is also given as one of the prasadams in temples in most of the places in South India. Kalkandu bath | kalkandu sadam, is a creamy sweet | dessert, made using rice, milk and sugar candy. I have posted kalkandu pongal but this one is with Millets. Varagu gives an excellent replacement of Raw rice. I wanted to make it using panakarkandu| palm candy, but ended up by making millet kalkandu bath. I will try to post the panakalkandu version of pongal too. Though we don't kalkandu pongal on the Pongal festival day, this can me made on the kannu pongal day. Needless to say this is the best neivedyam for Navarati and other traditional festivals.
The addition of milk in this sweet candy pongal makes it more creamier and delicious. You can add some condensed milk in the last to enhance the richness and taste.
I got the Sugar candy | Kalkandu from Sri Murugan stores Singapore. They have both the small and big variety of Kalkandu. Since i used the big variety for making my kalakandu pongal with rice, i chose the small diamond kalkandu. Sri murugan stores has a wide range of Indian grocery and even the millet i used for this pongal is got from there. They deliver island wide and order can be placed through Sri Murugan Android and iOs app too.
Check out my Complete collection of Pongal festival recipes.

KALKANDU PONGAL RECIPE | PONGAL FESTIVAL RECIPES

Kalkandu -Pongal
Pongal festival is coming next week and it is the first traditional festival of Tamil people in the year 2014. Though we make Sakkarai Pongal  for pongal festival, this kalkandu pongal we make on the next day of pongal along with variety rice. My mom makes it very well and during my trip to India i took a pack  of kalkandu |rock candy from my mom , which was bigger in size . I made kalkandu pongal yesterday and it tasted just out of the world. Try out this creamy, milky pongal .
I used the big rock candy. If using the small kalkandu the measurement  for 1/2 cup rice add 1/2 cup of kalkandu.

PURAN POLI RECIPE | PARRUPU POLI RECIPE

POLI WITH CHANNA DAL POORNAM

puran-poli
Puran  Poli |Holige Obbattu is a traditional sweet generally we make during Aavani avittam, Bogi pandigai and some people make during Ganesha Chathurthi too. I have posted the recipe of THENGAI POLI already. During my mom’s visit here 2 weeks back i asked her to make puran poli for me and i wanted to learn the procedure of making kadala paruppu poornam which when i tried first time went wrong. My mom is a super expert in making polis and i still remember my childhood days, she and my grand mother used to make polis in bulk and they happily share with our neighbours too. Me and my sister with our friends used to sit outside the kitchen with plates in hand and hot polis smeared with ghee are served on our plates. Those days we never care about the weight and eat heartily.
But now a days we are so diet conscious and nobody want to stuff themselves  with sweets.  This recipe yields 11 puran polis and finally i learnt the recipe of making kadalai paruppu poornam from mom , which you have already seen in my MODAKAM -WITH CHANNA DAL POORNAM post. Check out my carrot poli recipe with full Video.
UPDATE: As many readers faced issue while kneading the dough and the amount of oil used. As such the recipe is tried and tested at my home by me and my mom and given with precise measurements. But since i got feedback from readers, i wanted to check it out. Me and my mom tried this few times with the same measurements, and we had mixed results. Final inference is, the quantity of oil depends upon the texture of the flour. So first knead the dough with water and then add 3-4 tblsp of oil on the top of it and cover it and keep aside for 4-5 hours. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused . For the first time in these 8 years of blogging, changing the measurement of the recipe (only the quantity of oil) in the ingredients list. Sorry again.

Ulundu vadai recipe, Medhu vadai recipe

Ulundu-vadai
“Ulundu Vadai or Medhu Vadai, a popular, crispy, South Indian snack | breakfast accompaniment made using Urad dal. I usually make Medhu vadai during festivals or when I have guests at home, hence, never really got an opportunity to patiently click pictures. I am used to making Medhu Vadais for a long time now and I can confidently make them in large quantities as well. Since my mom is here with me for a week, I decided to make ulundu vadais and she sweetly waited for me to finish clicking the pictures, after which we both enjoyed the Vadais with piping hot filter coffee. A perfect combo for a rainy weather, you bet!

COCONUT POLI | THENGAI POLI RECIPE

  coconut poli
Thengai Poli or Sweet Poli is my most favorite sweet which we normally make for Bogi (the before day of Pongal festival) and for Aavani avittam. Though my mom usually make poli with channa dal poornam i love this Thengai poli more than that.
Thengai Poli is one of my most favorite one and though my mom makes poli mostly with channa dal pooranam, i am not a great fan of that. She always makes 2-3 polis separately for me with  coconut poornam(filling).

VEN PONGAL RECIPE | KHARA PONGAL RECIPE

   pongal

“Ven Pongal recipe with video and step by step pictures, A popular South Indian breakfast made by cooking rice and lentils, garnished with cumin, whole pepper and cashews topped with ghee. Ven Pongal or Khara Pongal is a popular South Indian breakfast recipe made with raw rice and yellow moong lentils. In Tamil Brahmin households, we make this Ven Pongal in the month of
Margazhi, also called as Dhanur maasam. Nothing like savouring this delicious
Pongal with chutney and sambar along with a piping hot cup of filter coffee. I
sometimes also make Ven Pongal for dinner. Nowadays, many of us refrain from
eating white rice due to health reasons. Hence, I have also tried making Ven Pongal
by replacing rice with either millets Thinai Ven Pongal or sooji Rava Ven
