Dry fruits poli, How to make poli easy method

No sugar added poli

Dry fruits poli, a no sugar less oil Indian dessert recipe, a healthy version of poli, recipe with step by step pictures. Poli also called as Obattu, Holige, puran poli, vermi in different languages, is a sweet loaded with ghee. The stuffing inside the polis varies from place to place as South Indians, Maharastrians use chana dal and gujaratis use Toor dal. Apart from these traditional polis we also make different varieties of poli with our own creative ideas. I have posted carrot poli, thenga poli apart from the traditional ones with chana dal and the Maharastrian style puran poli. I still remember the way amma and patti makes poli loaded with oil and a super delicious soft polis. They make in huge batches and even distribute to our neighbors too. I don't claim an expert in making polis like the same way she makes, but i can make decent polis. It is more you gain mastery over it by practice. As i do it only once a year for aavani avittam and that too in a very small quantity, my output will not match her level of excellence.
As we all are becoming health conscious and running out of time when any festival falls on a week day. But still we want to follow the traditions too and i am seeing many young girls around the world are so enthusiastic in doing all the delicacies on a festival day.
I am no sure whether diabetic patients can consume dates and nuts, so i don't claim this diabetic friendly sweets but you can call no sugar added sweet. Try this relatively healthy version of poli and enjoy the festival. Also check out my

Millet Nei appam recipe | Karthigai deepam recipes

Nei appam recipe
Nei appam | Unniyappam is a traditional sweet generally prepared in our homes for Karthigai deepam, Janmashtami,Ganesha chaturthi, Onam and avani avittam. I have already posted nei appam, wheat appam and many more Karthigai deepam recipes. Two years back, when i learnt the recipe of Traditional Mysore pak from my friend's mom, she told me the recipe of Nei appam too.Though i noted down the measurement of rice:jaggery, i didn't note down anything else. But i remember the way she was explaining to me. So i tried the same using millets instead of rice. Varagu and Thinai will work out very well for sweet appams. I used Samai(little Millet) for making this nei appams and they turned out very well. Check out my full collection of Karthigai deepam recipes.

  • Add curry leaves, asafoetida, ghee and salt to the ground mixture.

paruppu- vadai
  • Carefully drop them in the oil. You can put 4-5 in one batch depending upon the size of the pan.
  • Fry till golden brown on both sides.
  • Do not fry in too hot oil, else inside of the vadais will not get cooked.

Aama vadai
Notes:
  1. Always cook the vadai on medium flame. Else it will not be cooked inside.
  2. You can add the curry leaves while grinding.
  3. You can add finely chopped cabbage to the the ground batter .
  4. Some fennel seeds and onions can be added to make it as masala vadai.
  5. Left over vadais can be dunked into rasam and can be made as rasa vadai.
  6. Ghee is added to give crispiness to the vada, the tip i learnt from a cook mami who cookes for us during festivals.

Karthigai Appam recipe | Sweet appam

Sweet appam
I actually wanted to post Vella adai recipe(will post tomorrow ) but while i was talking to my sister we both were casually sharing the memories about the  Karthigai sweet appam which my mom makes for Karthigai deepam. Also she makes it for Janmashtami too. Then only i realised i haven't posted it here. I have posted the wheat appam recipe, the same one she will deep fry. As we used to gobble it when amma makes it. As i am not a big sweet lover, during my childhood days, especially all jaggery based sweets i hate, i love sweet appam one very much. The entire house filled with lights, we all wearing pattu pavadai, amma making appam wearing the traditional 9 yards saree and wearing all the traditional jewellery, this appam reminded me of all special moments. Being a nurse, by profession, she can't wear bright and big nose rings daily, so she wears only during the festival. And she look very beautiful in that traditional costume and the jewellery. So always Karthigai deepam reminds me of this scene in our house in Madurai. Let me share the recipe of Karthigai sweet appam today. Check the Karthigai Deepam collections .

PURAN POLI RECIPE | PARRUPU POLI RECIPE

POLI WITH CHANNA DAL POORNAM

puran-poli
Puran  Poli |Holige Obbattu is a traditional sweet generally we make during Aavani avittam, Bogi pandigai and some people make during Ganesha Chathurthi too. I have posted the recipe of THENGAI POLI already. During my mom’s visit here 2 weeks back i asked her to make puran poli for me and i wanted to learn the procedure of making kadala paruppu poornam which when i tried first time went wrong. My mom is a super expert in making polis and i still remember my childhood days, she and my grand mother used to make polis in bulk and they happily share with our neighbours too. Me and my sister with our friends used to sit outside the kitchen with plates in hand and hot polis smeared with ghee are served on our plates. Those days we never care about the weight and eat heartily.
But now a days we are so diet conscious and nobody want to stuff themselves  with sweets.  This recipe yields 11 puran polis and finally i learnt the recipe of making kadalai paruppu poornam from mom , which you have already seen in my MODAKAM -WITH CHANNA DAL POORNAM post. Check out my carrot poli recipe with full Video.
UPDATE: As many readers faced issue while kneading the dough and the amount of oil used. As such the recipe is tried and tested at my home by me and my mom and given with precise measurements. But since i got feedback from readers, i wanted to check it out. Me and my mom tried this few times with the same measurements, and we had mixed results. Final inference is, the quantity of oil depends upon the texture of the flour. So first knead the dough with water and then add 3-4 tblsp of oil on the top of it and cover it and keep aside for 4-5 hours. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused . For the first time in these 8 years of blogging, changing the measurement of the recipe (only the quantity of oil) in the ingredients list. Sorry again.

COCONUT POLI | THENGAI POLI RECIPE

  coconut poli
Thengai Poli or Sweet Poli is my most favorite sweet which we normally make for Bogi (the before day of Pongal festival) and for Aavani avittam. Though my mom usually make poli with channa dal poornam i love this Thengai poli more than that.
Thengai Poli is one of my most favorite one and though my mom makes poli mostly with channa dal pooranam, i am not a great fan of that. She always makes 2-3 polis separately for me with  coconut poornam(filling).
